Traditional Single Page Applications (SPAs) ship megabytes of JavaScript to the browser, which both delays the first page load and hurts search engine optimization (SEO). The Next.js App Router and React Server Components (RSC) changed this equation at its root.

The React Server Components (RSC) Revolution

Server Components run directly on the server, connect straight to the database and send zero JavaScript to the client, delivering only a pure HTML/React stream. Huge libraries (such as date-fns or Markdown parsers) never show up in the client bundle size.

Streaming SSR with Suspense

In the past, when fetching data on the server, the slowest API request would block the rendering of the entire page. With Streaming SSR, the quickly loaded shell is painted instantly, while delayed pieces of data are injected into the DOM as they arrive inside Suspense boundaries.

Dynamic Tags and On-Demand Revalidation

Next.js's revalidateTag API refreshes the related pages in the background the moment a webhook arrives from a content management system (CMS), serving dynamic content at static speed.
